Acupuncture and Acupressure can be used throughout pregnancy and labour and also post labour. During pregnancy it can be used to help with symptoms such as morning sickness, backache, headaches, indigestion, sinusitis and also energy levels and the well being of both the mother and baby. Towards the birth both acupressure and acupuncture can be used to help prepare the body for labour and also to establish labour once it has begun.
There are also many acupressure points which can used to decrease any pain during labour and there has been a lot of research done to show that women find this beneficial both for any pain relief and also for maintaining a sense of calm throughout the labour. There are acupuncturists who will assist with the labour itself who can be found by contacting the British Acupuncture Council. The other way of using these points is to learn them throughout the pregnancy so that they can be applied by yourself or a partner or friend during pregnancy and labour.
Acupressure is a technique where pressure is applied to the 'acu' points it is extremly effective and is a perfect tool for self treatment when symptoms occur. The Acupressure techniques and location of 'Acu' points for any of the symptoms mentioned above can be taught by an acupuncturist during pregnancy and prior to labour.
