Solution Focused Brief Therapy is an approach to enabling people to build change in their lives in the shortest possible time. It believes that change comes from two principle sources: from encouraging clients to describe their preferred future i.e. what their lives will be like should the therapy be successful and from detailing the skills and resources they have to enable this change. From those descriptions, clients are able to make adjustments to what they do in their lives.
SFBT treats clients as resourceful and experts in all aspects of their lives. SFBT holds the view that the way clients talk about their lives, the words and the language they use, can help them to make changes they find helpful. From the outset, the therapist and client co-construct a conversation that will lead to useful changes in the client's life. The therapist asks questions on what the transformation will look like and what it will mean to the client. SFBT places the emphasis on a client's hoped-for outcome from therapy and what the client aspires to.
