Oncology Massage

Oncology massage is a highly individualised and gentle massage which is adapted to make it safe and comfortable for persons with a current or previous cancer diagnosis. It is offered by therapists specifically trained in Oncology Massage. The massage is adapted to accommodate the person who may have a compromised immune system and various side effects from treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgeries.
Full body massage can be offered if appropriate or can be limited to arms, hands, shoulders, etc. A full consultation and discussion prior to treatment will be required. Due to its effects, both physiological and psychological, massage therapy can help reduce several of the symptoms brought on by cancer and its treatments, such as: nausea, pain, fatigue, anxiety, stress and depression. Stress and anxiety can persist even after treatment, affecting quality of life and ability to move on. Some people worry that massage could cause cancer cells to spread to other parts of the body. Research has not found any evidence of this happening, but massage therapists will avoid any areas affected by cancer, such as tumour sites or lymph nodes. Talk to your cancer doctor or specialist nurse if you are worried. (MacMIllan Cancer Support)
